New Development of the Marrickville Metro Shopping Centre

Marrickville Metro Shopping Centre opened in 1987. It was built on the site of a former woollen mill owned by Vicars Woollen Mills, a family-run business from 1893 up until its closure in the 1970s.

In 2017, AMP Capital (on behalf of UniSuper, owners of the shopping centre) commissioned Hames Sharley to expand the existing shopping centre by developing the site of the former Shelley Drinks factory bound by Edinburgh Road, Murray and Smidmore Streets.

The new development centred around enhancing visitor experience through revitalization whilst promoting adaptive reuse techniques, incorporating sustainability factors and maintaining historical conservation measures.

The new wing of the centre opened in June 2021. It includes a row of restaurants and cafes with a corridor of open-air dining tables. Pedestrians can walk between the new extension and the original centre at the street level or via an overhead walkway covered by an inverted triangular truss with a mirrored surface, with a coloured glass siding.
